HOW TO TRAVEL WITH YOUR JEWELRY

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

It’s hard to leave your jewelry at home while traveling, especially pieces like your engagement ring. According to a survey by Jewelers Mutual Insurance Group, reports of loss/theft of jewelry have doubled since 2015. This doesn’t mean you have to stop bringing your jewelry with you on vacation. Here are some tips that will help keep you and your jewelry safe wherever you are.

Having your pieces insured is the first step before taking them too far from home. Tick Tock Jewelers will provide an insurance appraisal for any piece we sell, and can also write you an appraisal for pieces you already have. We will also happily guide you through finding the least expensive insurance options.

Before you leave, take a clear picture of the jewelry you plan to bring. This will provide proof of ownership and a description of the piece, just in case. Do not put your jewelry in your checked bag, and instead opt for wearing it or keeping it in your personal carry-on. Some packing tips are using a button to hook your earrings through and stringing your necklaces through a straw to prevent tangling.

While enjoying your vacation, don’t let yourself look like an easy target; if in public, we recommend that you tuck your necklace into your shirt, turn your engagement ring towards the inside of your hand, and pull sleeves over your watch/bracelets. The number one place to lose your jewelry is at the beach. Cold water can shrink your fingers allowing rings to slip off, so leave them in a safe place during beach days. It is best to not wear any jewelry in the ocean. Most hotels have a safe you can use to store your jewelry.

If you’re going on a trip and need any appraisals, cleaning, or storage advice, Tick Tock Jewelers is happy to provide you with any help.
